Mrs (should be Miss) Hartwig was born March 24, 1900, in Goodland, Kan, to Richard and Rose (Wagner) Hartwig.
She spent her early years in Kansas, graduating from Goodland High School in 1918. She earned her bachelor's and master's degree at Kansas State University. In 1927, Miss Hartwig moved to Brookings, where she taught entomology and zoology at South Dakota State University.
In 1968, Miss Hartwig moved to Aurora. She retired in 1970, after 43 years of teaching in the field of biology.
Miss Hartwig was instrumental in starting the Newman Club on campus and the honor society of Phi Kappa Phi. In 1951 she was the second person to receive the Goerge Lincoln Brown Award for inspired teaching. In May 1981, Miss Hartwig was awarded an honarary doctorate for her work at SDSU. In 1985, she donated the 305-bell carillion that plays in the Coughlin Campanile.
Miss Hartwig was a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Gamma Sigma Delta, Kappa Delta Phi, St. Williams Catholic Church, the Brookings Riding Club and the South Dakota American Saddle Horse Association. She enjoyed riding her saddle horses at the National Horse Shows in the Madison Square Garden, Dallas, Kansas City and Denver.
She was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.1 |

Last Will and TestamentOFCHRIS SHAFER I, CHRIS SHAFER, of the Village of Saunemin, County of Livingston, and State of Illinois, being of lawful age, and of sound and disposing mind and memory, not acting under duress, menace, fraud, or the undue influence of any person whatsoever, and intending to dispose of all my property and estate upon my death, do hereby make, publish, and declare this to be my Last Will and Testament, and I do hereby expressly revoke all other and former wills and codicils to wills by me made. FIRST: I order and direct that my Executrix, hereinafter named, pay all of my just debts, funeral expenses, and expenses of my last illness, and all estate and inheritance taxes necessarily icurred as the result of my death, as soon after my death as is conveniently possible, having due consideration for the orderly administration of my estate. SECOND: I give to each of the following who survives me the sum set forth opposite his or her name: Herman Johnson$500.00 Elsie Steidinger and Elmer Steidinger, share and share alike$500.00 Jesse D. Hutchcraft$200.00 Bertha Shafer$200.00 Rhinhard Shafer$200.00 Emma Fieldcamp$200.00 Should any of the foregoing bequests in this "SECOND" clause of my Last Will and Testament lapse by reason of the death of any person or persons hereinbefore named, then, and in that event, I order and direct that such bequest shall pass into my residuary estate and become part thereof and be administered and distributed as provided in the "THIRD" paragraph of this, my Last Will and Testament. THIRD: All of the rest, residue and remainder of my property, be it real property, personal property, or property of a mixed character, and wheresoever it may be situated, of which I may die seized and possessed, I give, devise, and bequeath unto my wife, Nola Macie Shafer, absolutely, to have and to hold in fee simple forever. FOURTH: I hereby nominate, constitute, and appoint my said wife, Nola Macie Shafer, to be Executrix of this, my Last Will and Testament, and direct that no security on the Executor's bond be required of my said wife. I give to my Executrix the following powers and discretions, in each case to be exercisable without court order: A.To sell at public or private sale, to retain, to lease, to borrow money and for that purpose to mortgage or to pledge, all or part of the real or personal property of my estate; B.To settle claims in favor of or against my estate; C.To exercise or not to exercise any election or option granted to Executors by the Internal Revenue Code in force at my death, even though such exercise or non-exercise increases or decreases estate principal or income, without adjustment to principal or income; D.To distribute the residue of my estate in case or in kind or partly in each, and for this purpose the determination of the Executrix as to the value of any property distributed in kind shall be conclusive; and E.To execute and deliver any deeds, contracts, mortgages, bills of sale or other instruments necessary or desirable for the exercise of her powers and discretions as Executrix.
