MemoMemo: A note from Art Hitzeman, great grandson of Fred:
I don't believe Fred Hitzeman had a middle name, though somehow he has been tagged with "Gotheb" or "Gottlieb." I think the confusion comes from an army discharge document for his son Edwin, which under the space for "Father's Name" has an illegible scrawl that looks like "Gotheb" or possibly "Father" but is certainly not "Fred." No other document I've seen (baptism, census, marriage, death certificate, etc.) has a middle name, and I don't think the preparer of the WWI document knew anything about the family, so I think it's a mistake.5

MemoMemo: A note from Art Hitzeman, grandson of Alvin:
My grandfather Alvin HItzeman didn't have a middle name. The army forced him to choose a middle initial during WWI, so he picked "I" for his home state of Indiana. The initial only appears on WWI army documents, though, and should not be considered a real part of his name, since he didn't use it after the war. And he never used the full "Indiana," though it does make him sound pleasantly like an adventurous archeologist!5
