Charles Earle Potter Jr., was born May 25, 1927, in Milford, Conn., the son of the late Charles Earle Potter Sr. and Viola (Swezey) Potter. He died March 28, 2004, at his home east of Preston, at the age of 76 years, 10 months and 3 days. He was reared in the Trumbull, Conn., area where he also went to school. On Nov. 27, 1944, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served during World War II in the Seabees. He re-enlisted in the Navy in 1951 and served in the Seabees until 1956. He was united in marriage with Shirley Schallbruch on Jan. 5, 1955, in Snow Hill, Md., and two sons were born of this union. They settled in Redding, Calif., in 1957, and continued living there until 1997, when they moved to Preston to be near their son Buck who had relocated his business to Preston in 1996. He attended church at the Bible Baptist Church in Preston and enjoyed studying God's word. He served many years in Christian ministry including Christian Boys Brigade, held many home Bible studies and served as deacon numerous times. He was also a hard worker all of his life. He was a member of Local #3 Operating Engineers. In retirement, he loved working on his tractor and turning the 20 acres he lived on into a parklike setting. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Charles "Buck" Potter III; and one brother, Dan Potter. Survivors include his wife, Shirley, of the home; one son, Ernest "Biff' and wife, Monica Potter, Antioch, Calif.; daughter-in-law, Joannie and husband, Sam Miller, Preston; two brothers: Gene "Biff" Potter, Shelton, Conn. and Bart Potter, Pineville, Ore.; two sisters: Eunice Todhunter, Pollack, Idaho, and Patricia Young, Sho-Low, Ariz.; four grandchildren: Joshua and Jacob Potter, Antioch, Calif., and Shawn and Melissa Miller, Preston; and several nieces, nephews and other family and friends who will all sadly miss him.2 |

[from Siskiyou Daily News, 14 Jan 2005] Bill Carlton Nowdesha [Updated: Thursday, January 13, 2005 3:47 PM PST] Scott Bar resident Bill Carlton Nowdesha, 82, passed away at his home on Jan. 8, 2005. Bill was born to Joseph Harden Nowdesha and Ida Eliza Betz Nowdesha, on Jan. 20, 1922. He lived almost his entire life in Scott Bar. His family worked for the mining company in Scott Bar prior to World War II. The Nowdesha Riffle below Hamburg was named for his Uncle Jake who was a notorious miner in the area. Bill was the youngest of eight children. He went to school at Scott Bar schoolhouse until the eighth grade and then had to work to take care of his mother. He worked along the Scott River for Johnny Williams and men mining for gold at the salmon hole until he was 17. It was then that he moved with the mining company and his family to Nelson, Nev. He and his brothers ran a shovel, digging ore. He met the love of his life, Ann Bever who was hired by the family to take care of his mother, cook and clean. Bill and Ann were married in Las Vegas, Nev. on Aug. 19, 1943. He brought his young bride back home to Scott Bar to live in 1946, after living for a brief period in Arizona and Redondo Beach. Bill worked with his friends Fred Rainey and Ed Edward for a contractor digging holes and installing power poles from Horse Creek up river. He began his logging career in a logging camp in Happy Camp. For many years he took whatever logging jobs were near home until finally going to work for E.E. Lucas Logging in Seiad, where he worked 25 years until retiring. His wife, Ann, retired as postmaster of Scott Bar Post Office two years later. He always was active in the community. He was a school board member, Klamath Union Parent's Club member. He served two years on Siskiyou County Grand Jury, and many years as a board member of the Scott Bar Community Association. He spent many hours on the upkeep and improvements of the Scott Bar Hall, which was the old schoolhouse that he attended. Scott Bar was very dear to him. He loved living and working on his small family ranch on Mill Creek with his kids and grandchildren. Bringing in the hay was a family event and was always something to look forward to. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather to his family. He was always doing things for others, not expecting anything in return. We will all miss him very much. When he retired he became known for the birdhouses and other woodcrafts that he made. He, like his father, was a carpenter. Survivors include his wife, Ann, of Scott Bar; sons and daughters in-law, Bill and Sharon Nowdesha of Shasta Lake, Mike and Brenda Nowdesha of Klamath River and Steve and Vicki Nowdesha of Scott Bar; grandchildren, their spouses and great-grandchildren, Jennifer Nowdesha of Florida, Monica and Earnest Potter, Joshua and Jacob of Antioch, Becky and Jeffrey Jaggers, Amanda, Adrianna, Aimie, Alyssa and Hunter of Santa Rosa, Charlie and Abbi Nowdesha of Yreka, Brian and Patience Nowdesha, Issiah and August of Anderson, Joseph Nowdesha and Gracie of Walla Walla, Wash., Jami and Rob Leeth, Katlynn and Trapper of Ohio, Jake and Jamie Nowdesha of Montague and Jered Nowdesha of Scott Bar. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Ida Nowdesha; brothers, Howard, Joseph and Archie Nowdesha; and sisters, Ethel Cuppers, Alyce Miller, Grace Skillen and Laurel Keyes. A memorial service and reception is 11 a.m. Jan 15 at Scott Bar Community Hall. Private Graveside service for family only will be at a later date.
