Obituary | about 12 April 1912 | Obituary: The obituary for Cary was recorded about 12 April 1912. Carey W Jennings, a veteran of the Civil War, died at his home at Sorento, April 11, 1912. Mr Jennings was born January 24, 1835 near Indianapolis, Indiana, where he lived until he was four years old, when his parents came to Bond county, locating near Greenville. This part of the state was then comparatively a wilderness and many of the original Redman were still here.
When about 18 years of age his parents died in the cholera epedemic. Mr. Jennings then went to make his home with an elder brother, who was a minister of the M.E. Church.
On August 9, 1856 he married Miss Mary E. Willey and they lived together for 55 years. To them were born seven children, five of who were sons, namely: William F., who died in infancy, William G. of Panama, Charles C., who died young, Elliott and George of Springfiled. The two daughters are Mrs. Amanda F Moss and Mrs Ornetta D. Coleman, both of Sorento. Mr. & Mrs. Jennings also took into their home and reared two orphans, who are now Mrs. Mary Hill of Fresno, CA and Mrs. Lizzie Drake of Sorento.
When the great conflict between the North and South came on, Mr. Jennings enlisted on Aug 12, 1861, as a member of the 3rd Ill. Cav, serving more than three years. He participated in many engagements, among them Arkansas Post, Champion Hills, Black River Bridge, the siege of Vicksburg, lasting 47 days, the siege of Jackson, Mississippi, lasting 7 days.
He leaves one brother, Cyrus of DeSota, MO, who is the only near surviving member of the family.4 |
