Note26 June 1944The following infomation is from Charles T Rinkel, Jr: Notes from a letter from my grandfather, Martin Luther Jennings, to my mother, Lela Cora Jennings Rinkel, November 26, 1944.

"My Father's name was Cyrus K Jennings. He was born in Indiana near Indianapolis and in a neighborhood called Stotts Creek. His father's name was Bennonia and they first came to Illinois settling in Cumberland County and later moved to Bond County. My father first married Rachel Hannan. She died and left no children. So he enlisted in the Civil War, served 4 years and 8 months and after returning married Sarah Jane Cornelius, my mother, and raised 6 children -- 3 boys and 3 girls. Two girls are still living and the last time I heard anything about Louis he was still living.

As to Bryan, his father and my grandfather Jennings were cousins. That would make me a third cousin. But I never thought enough of him to care for his kinship. You were born in Clay County, Ill and I am the only living witness. I can get you a Birth certificate. I got Irene one about 2 years ago."

Chuck's note:
1) The Bryan referred to in this letter is William Jennings Bryan.
2) Martin Luther Jennings, my grandfather, is the man who commented upon the death of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, "If he isn't in hell there isn't any need of having one."4

Note23 January 1955On 23 Jan 1955 Eva Irene Jennings interviewed Lewis M Jennings and wrote the following information.

Three families came out together from Wales, England to Portsmouth, Virginia and settled on the Cumberland River as farmers. Their names were McLean (he was not sure of the spelling), McKinney and Jennings. There were three Jennings brothers, and each of them had three children. The first three whose names he remembers were:

BENONAH, who had three sons -- our grandfather, Cyrus K., Elliott and Cary;
ISRAEL, whose daughter Martha was the mother of William Jennings Bryan and therefore Martha and our grandfather were first cousins.
ABRAHAM, the names of whose children he could not remember.

From Virginia our family traveled by covered wagon, stopping for a time in Maryland; then on to Brown County, Ohio.

Our grandfather, Cyrus K. was a Charter Member, as was Ruth Long's Grandfather Kelly, of Samuel McAdams Post 479 of the G.A.R. at Sorento, Illinois. He lived to be 92 and is buried in Nettleton, Arkansas. His wife, our grandmother was Sara Jane Cornelius, is buried near Old Ripley, Illinois.

Uncle Lewis believed that our great grandfather, Benonah Jennings was probably the son of Abraham. He also said that our Great, Great Uncle, James McKinney, had a very active part in Braddock's Defeat as a member of the Virginia Blues Regiment and that one of our ancestors -- probably Silas Jennings -- was also a member of that famed regiment. He said most of the male members of the family were given Biblical names.

I have a vivid recollection of hearing Grandfather Jennings tell of "Running the Gauntlet" to avoid being taken prisoner by the Confederate Army so I inquired as to the battle in which this occurred. Uncle Lewis said it was the Battle of Peach Tree Ridge when Longstreet was trying to retake Nashville. Our grandfather was assigned to the rear guard on the road to Franklin to hold back the Confederates until his outfit was well entrenched. When the Confederates reached the Rear Guard they did not have sufficient food to take many prisoners so lined up with bayonets and allowed those Union Men who could run through without being wounded to do so. My grandfather cut loose his musket and other gear so he might run faster, and made it but not without suffering three small slashes, scars of which he retained the rest of his life. He did not report in as being wounded, merely got a bandage and continued so no wound shows on his record.

Uncle Lewis, being 80 years old, was a bit excited by my interest and talked very rapidly, but I believe the above covers all the information I was able to secure. He was not sure as to the spelling of the name of my great grandfather "BENONAH" but said it appears in the Old Testament.
