Obituary | September 1909 | Obituary: The obituary for Nancy was recorded in September 1909. The Neoga News (Neoga, IL) September 1909 Obituary of Mrs. Levi Jones Nancy Caroline Cornwell was born October 24, 1835, in Clermont Co., Ohio. She was first married to Samuel Armstrong who died April 9, 1855, leaving her with two small children. One died in infancy: the other, Marcus, reached manhood and died in Neoga, July, 23, 1883. She was married to James McKinney, October 5, 1856. Together with their families, and her aged father, they started for the West, traveling, as was customary in those days, by wagon, from Ohio to Illinois , being six weeks on the way. They settled in Clay Co., Ill. , and enduring all the hardships that the early settlers were called upon to bear, started their new home in the West. They afterward lived in Richland and Jasper counties, finally settling in Neoga, in 1878. After many years residence together here, Mr. McKinney died July 4, 1898. To this union were born six children: two boys dying in infancy, a daughter, Mrs. John Mills (Laura), who died in Neoga, June 15, 1907, Leaving three living. She lived a widow several years, alone in this present home, enjoying the old place so much that she refused to give up her home and live with any of her children, who greatly desired that should do so. Four years ago, February 8, she was married to Levi B. Jones in Neoga , Ill. and they lived very happily together until her death Sept. 28, 1909. In her younger days, Mrs. Jones was connected with the Baptist Church , but there being no church of that denomination in Neoga, when she came here, she united with the M.E, Church and has been a member of this church for over a quarter of a century. About five months ago, Mrs. Jones on returning from a visit to her son’s home, fell, and has since been very feeble and unable to leave her home. Her condition was not considered critical until about five weeks ago. Since that time she has been under the care of a physician. A complication of diseases was the cause of the tedious illness until she was suddenly relieved by death, Tuesday. She leaves her husband, Levi B. Jones, three children, Mrs. G.A. Steward, of Enid , Okla. , Dr. J.P. McKinney of Neoga, and Thomas McKinney of Mattoon: three stepchildren, Mrs. Hannah Philhower of Sullivan, R. McKinney and Mrs. Charley Wakefield of Neoga; thirty six grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren, one brother, Augustus Cornwell, of Neoga: three brothers and two sisters in Ohio, all very old. Mrs. Jones, at the time of her death was aged 78 years, 11 months, and 4 days. The funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock p.m. at her home, The services were in charge of their pastor, Rev. S.N. Wakefield and interment took place in the Neoga, Cemetery. ****************************** Notes: Nancy Cornwell was the daughter of Elijah Cornwell and Phebe Edwards, both natives of New Jersey. Nancy married Samuel Armstrong on 25 September 1851 in Clermont, Ohio. Elijah and Phebe Edwards Cornwell both died in Clermont County, Ohio. ***************************** Obituary courtesy of Charles McKinney, Great Grandson of Nancy McKinney1 |
