[from St. James Plaindealer, St James, MN, 5 Oct 2010] St. James, MN — Ervin Wassman, 90, of rural Ormsby, Minnesota died on Wednesday morning, September 29, 2010 at Immanuel-St. Joseph’s Hospital in Mankato, Minnesota. A celebration of life service was held on Monday, October 4, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Galena Township, rural Ormsby with Reverend Roger L. Mackie officiating. Burial was in the Church Cemetery in rural Ormsby with full military honors by the Foster-Bernhardt American Legion Post #373 of Trimont. Visitation was held on Sunday, October 3, 2010 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Kramer Family Funeral Home in Trimont and continued for one hour prior to the services at the church on Monday. Ervin Martin Wassman was born on August 9, 1920 to Herman and Amelia (Rotermund) Wassman in Long Lake Township, Watonwan County, Minnesota. He was baptized and later confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Galena Township. He then attended school in Ormsby and St. James as well as Agriculture School at the University Farm, St. Paul Campus. He enlisted in the United States Army on June 15, 1942 and served in the Pacific Theater, Ulithi, being wounded in the Philippines for which he was awarded a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He was honorably discharged on December 4, 1945. He has lived with shrapnel pieces in his one wrist since he served in the war. On December 29, 1945 he was united in marriage to Thelma Anderson at Waverly Lutheran Church in rural Trimont, Minnesota. After their marriage they farmed in rural Ormsby until their retirement, remaining on the farm helping with the garden and mowing the lawn. Ervin was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Galena Township, serving as a Deacon, participated in the Men’s club and zone Lutheran Laymen’s League with Reverend Barry as zone counselor. He also served on the District #126 school board, on the Farm Bureau board for many years, on the Ormsby Elevator board and active with the livestock feeders association in St. Paul. He enjoyed working with wood where he made furniture for his home. He loved to listen to music and enjoyed singing. Survivors include his wife, Thelma Wassman of rural Ormsby, MN; two daughters, Carola (Bob) Cantrall of Dixon, CA and Barbara (Rick) Johnson of Daniel, WY; two sons, Gary (Linda) Wassman of Truman, MN and Brian (Julie) Wassman of Scandia, MN; twelve grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Martha Wassman of Ormsby, MN, Dorothy Anderson and Bernice Anderson both of St. James, MN; nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. Ervin was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Leah Voosen; infant sister; sisters, Gertrude Koester and Elsie Hilgendorf; brother, Norbert Wassman; brothers-in-law, Clair and Sanford Anderson, Edwin Koester and Edwin Hilgendorf; sister and brother-in-law, Merle and Marion Gaalswyk; and other relatives.3 |
