ROSE REDEKER WARD
"Mrs. Rose Ward was born in 1889 in Kansas. Her mother died when she was 18 months old, leaving a large family. She and her older sister, the two youngest, were raised by her grandparents. When her father had resettled in Iowa and came after her and her sister Bertha, the grandparents refused to give up little Rose, so the girls were split up, Bertha going with her father and Rose staying with her grandparents. As Rose grew up she went to a German School one year as her grandparents were German people. When Rose's grandfather died, Rose was left alone and she came to Ramona to live with an older brother who was a driller and rig mover and lived on a lease near Ramona. Rose was almost 18 years old at that time."
"Rose Redecker then hired out to help Mrs. Bert [Ide Belle] Ward who had a large family. Rose fell in love with one of the Ward sons. She and Cleo Ward were married in 1908. They had seven children in a ten year period. Willis, the eldest son, born in 1909, was a very good baby. Then came Cleo, Jr., in 1911. On Valentine's Day in 1914 she had twins. They were named Roman and Norman. As she did not have milk for both of them, she put Roman on a bottle and nursed Norman, but Norman only lived a little over a year. Mrs. Ward remembers yet how hard he tugged when nursing, but didn't seem to get nourishment. 'He cried a lot and so did I,' she said. 'In July 1915, we laid his little body in the Ramona cemetery."
"My son, Wayne, was born in 1916 and runs a garage here in Ramona today. My daughter, Rose, was born in 1918 and married James Nicholson, and my youngest, Belle, married Sam Bramy, after she served her country for two years in the Armed Forces. I have 24 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren."
[Mrs. Ward now lives retired in Ramona where her children look in on her each day to see how she is and to run errands for her."1

Background History of Henry and Josephine Wassmann

"The Background History of the Wassmann Families"
Henry C. Wassmann was baptized and attended German Lutheran parochial school while a boy in Indiana, and was confirmed there. He attended high[?] school at Brunswick, Indiana. At the age of eighteen he moved to Iroquois County, Illinois, and in 1881 he moved to St. Louis, Missouri. From there he went to Jerseyville, Illinois, where he married his wife Josephine Newberry. At least one of their children were born there. It was hard to determine exactly where all the children were born, as the family moved around a lot, and each set of relatives seemed to have a different birthplace for their own parent. I did the best I could with the information I could gather from obituaries and from relatives' information. Anyway, from there it is thought they moved to Iowa, where they lived until 1904. Then they moved to Dell Rapids, South Dakota. From there they moved to North Dakota, settling in Garner Township, Golden Valley County, a few miles east of the village of Golva, North Dakota. They purchased a farm there, where they lived out their remaining years. Grandfather Henry C. owned and operated a steam threshing rig and did most of the threshing in the area, until failing health in his last years put a stop to active work. He was also a Township Supervisor for Garner Township. He died at his farm home of a severe case of "dropsy" on June 18th, 1932. He was buried from the Methodist Church at Beach, North Dakota, and laid to rest in the city cemetery at Beach. His wife Josephine continued to live on the farm with her son Bill (who was now divorced from his wife). Josephine passed away at her farm home also, during Easter week in April, 1934. She had suffered from diabetes for many years; this, along with severe burns she suffered on her entire body, caused her death. Her clothing caught fire while doing the cooking in her home; she lived one week after. She is buried in the Beach Cemetery beside her husband. She was also buried from the Methodist Church. "Grandma" Wassmann, as she was affectionately called by all who knew her, was greatly missed by everyone. Her six sons were her pall bearers.

Henry and Josephine have the following list of descendants as of 1994: Ten children; twenty-nine grandchildren; eighty-three great grandchildren; one hundred four great-great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-great-grandchildren. All (?) eight of Henry's children were married, and they all had families except for Harry. All of the grandchildren married except for four, two of which died at birth. All had families except for Leslie, Dorothy, Alvin, James and Dale. Thirty-five great-grandchildren are married, and six great-great-grandchildren are married. The majority of them have families also. There is also a possibility that there may be more great-great-great-grandchildren that I have no knowledge of at this time. Their descendants are now scattered all over the United States doing all types of occupations.1

MemoMemo: [A note from the Wassmann Family Tree on Ancestry.com]

The following information was provided by Josephine's granddaughter Mrs. Ruth (Wassmann) Arnold.

Josephine and Henry C. Wassmann lived on the same road between Beach North Dakota and Golva as her folks Henry and Sybil Wassmann. One day about two years after the death of Henry C., Joshephine while preparing a turkey for dinner by burning off it's feathers, her dress caught fire. Josephine subsequetly died of those burns.

Ruth remembers seeing her grandmother in bed with burns all over her body. The combination of the burns and the fact that her diabetes was very bad led to her death.

After her death Henry and Sybil moved into Henry's farm as it was owned by Henry C and the farm they were on was rented. They lived and worked that farm until the depression forced them off the land in 1938. They packed up and moved to the Puyallup Valley of Washington State as many farmers had to do in those days.1

George Wassmann first wife, Myrtle, was a first cousin to Fred's wife Lina; and George's second wife, Vera, was a sister to Glen Allstot, Emma's husband. George and his first wife, Myrtle, homesteaded in eastern Golden Valley County in an area known as the Badlands east of Golva, when they came here from South Dakota after their marriage. After the death of his first wife, George then worked as a farm laborer for a few years; then he mined coal at various local coal mines for a few years; then he became a "Cat Skinner" on road construction for the county, until illness forced him to give up all heavy work the last year he lived. He also ran a snowplow for the county in the winter-time for some years. He died of cancer two days after New Years in 1944. His eldest daughter, Grace, was raised by her grandparents after her mother died. He and his second wife, Vera, lived in various towns after their marriage. Their two oldest daughters attended rural grade school during the early part of their life, then attended public school in Sentinel Butte, where they both graduated from high school.1

Fred and Lina bought a home in Golva, and moved there to make their home until his death in July, 1959. Fred still continued to farm his own land until the last year before he passed away. Lina continued to live in her home in Golva, until failing health, in 1969, forced her to moved to Beach, North Dakota, to make her home. She lived in a house there with her brother, Bill, a widower from Aberdeen, South Dakota, until her death in June 1972. Fred and Lina saw many hard times during their life time on the farm, but somehow survived it all, living through the Depression Years and the Dirty Thirties. Fred and Lina both suffered from heart conditions later in life, and Fred died of a heart attack, and Lina died of internal bleeding. Their four children all attended rural grade school in Garner Township. Clara graduated from high school in Sentinel Butte; the other three never got to go to high school. Lloyd served in the Army in W.W.2. He farmed for some years, during the early years of his marriage. Then he worked as a carpenter, ran a cafe, worked for an oil company, worked for Cable T.V., and is now semi-retired. He works at the swimming pool as a maintenance man in the summer time, in Sidney, Montana, where he lives. His wife, Nina, has cooked in cafes for many years, also did some baby sitting in her home after they moved to Sidney. Their two daughters, neither one went to high school; they both married as young teenagers. Both have worked as waitresses in various cafes in Glendive, Montana, and the oldest daughter also worked at the Coca Cola Plant, and her husband and her owned and opened a tavern and pizza house for a while. Her husband now is manager of Cable T.V. in Glendive, Montana. The other daughter's husband works for an oilfield company, and they live at Watford City, North Dakota now. Their children are all in various grades in school.1

Dorothy she and her husband were married while he was in the Army during W.W.2. He spent 44 months in the service, entering on his birthday, March 29th, 1942, and being discharged November 29th, 1945. He saw action in Europe, and also saw about every State in the U.S. during his Army service. After he came home, they bought a farm 12 miles south of Sentinel Butte, and have farmed and ranched there ever since. They will complete their 32nd year on the farm in December, 1977, and hope to continue to live there many more years yet. He is now a salesman and crop loss adjuster for the Federal Crop Insurance Corp. He spent almost six weeks in the fall of 1976 at Storm Lake, Iowa, adjusting crop losses there. He has been especially busy this summer of 1977 adjusting crop losses in the State of N.D. He is also a supervisor for the local Soil Conservation District at Beach, served on the Local Selective Service Board, served on the F.H.A. Board at Dickinson as a county committeeman for Golden Valley County. He is a member of the American Legion, where he has held several offices. He held the office of Treasurer for the local school board for 25 years, was a township supervisor for six years, and was a tax assessor for the township for a few years. They are members of Trinity Lutheran Church in Sentinel Butte, (A.L.C.), where he has been the Treasurer for a number of years. She has held the office of Secy. and Treas. for the Sunday School for a number of years. She is very active in the A.L.C.W. of the church also, and he is a member of the Lutheran Brotherhood. He was also church usher for quite a few years too. Dorothy also belongs to the local Birthday Club and a bingo club, as well as the Am. Legion Aux.

Dorothy stays at home and takes care of the ranch and the livestock and etc., when John is away from home adjusting crop losses. John used to do carpenter work for others as a sideline to farming until a severe back injury in November, 1973, forced him to give up that line of work. They have no family, so have always worked together side by side at whatever they set out to accomplish. They won the State Conservation Award for their farm for their county in 1967. They often receive high praise for the beauty of their farmstead, and their thousands of trees they have planted. Their only regret is that his parents and her father, Fred, didn't live long enough to see all they have accomplished. They have had their share of hard times. Fred and Lina were also very active in community affairs and church work. Fred was also a township supervisor for a number of years, and was a member of the school board for some years. Walter also was a township supervisor. He is also a member of Trinity Lutheran at Sentinel Butte. Dale and his family are also Lutherans. Jack Fakler and his children are Catholics; his wife and her boys are Lutheran.1

Henry and Josephine raised their granddaughter, Grace Marie, from the age of six years, at the death of her own mother, Myrtle Wassmann, in 1918. Their step-grandson, Leslie Normandy, also stayed with them quite a lot, also with his step-father Bill Wassmann, later on, as Bill continued to live on the farm after his parents death, until 1938, when he sold the farm and moved to Puyallup, Washington. He purchased a berry farm and operated that until the last years of his life. He retired and made his home with his sister and brother-in-law, Emma and Glen Allstot, at Puyallup. His funeral was held at Puyallup, and was buried there.

I don't know what Bill did for a living during the years he was married, but I imagine he farmed. He worked for his brother Fred on his farm, before he (Bill) was married. After his divorce from his wife, Daisy, he moved back home with his parents. His wife, Daisy, and daughter, Edna, moved to the home of a bachelor, where Daisy was the housekeeper, first on the farm for many years, then, after her employers retirement, they moved to Beach where he purchased a home. Daisy continued to work for him till her death. Her son, Leslie, moved to California in the late 30's. Her daughter, Edna, also moved to California in 1939. She was employed at the home of a movie director until her marriage. She is still working in the movie and T.V. industry, as she works for a catering service that supplies box lunches to movie and T.V. crews working out on location. Her husband, Bob, is a chauffeur for a dignitary in the movies. Leslie was a rodeo trick rider at the time of his death. Very little is known about either of his wives. He never had any children in either marriage.1
