Duane L Glade Duane L Glade, 84 of 300 Sesame Street, Cherokee, Iowa died Thursday December 15, 2005 in the Cherokee Regional Medical Center, following a brief illness. Visitation will be Sunday from 2:00pm to 7:00pm with a funeral service at 7:00pm at the Greenwood Funeral home, Cherokee, Iowa. He will then be flown to Dumas, Arkansas for burial next to his loving wife of 54 years in the Oakland Cemetery in Monticello, Arkansas. Online condolences may be sent at www.greenwoodfuneral.com. Duane L Glade was born January 22, 1921 in Osceola County, near Ocheyedan, Iowa, to Arthur and Rose (Ostermann) Glade. He attended schools in the Ocheyedan area, graduating from Ocheyedan High School in 1939. Duane attended the University of Iowa, majoring in civil engineering for 3 years. Duane served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, as Captain and pilot of a B-24 bomber. He flew 85 bombing missions in the European Theater and among his many honors received the distinguished Flying Cross from President Harry Truman for landing his crippled plane safely and saving the lives of his crewmen. On January 22, 1950 he married Jewell Adams Hays in Ocheyedan, Iowa. She preceded him in death July 12, 2004. They moved to Cherokee, Iowa in 1955 where Duane worked for Scothorn Construction of Cherokee, Iowa and later for Van Buskirk Construction out of Sioux City, Iowa. He assisted in the building of the Rathbun Dam near Centerville, Iowa. Finally, he worked for the Cherokee County Department of Secondary Roads maintenance for 17 years, retiring in 1986. he enjoyed being outdoors and daily walked around Spring Lake Park. Survivors include a daughter, Judy Hays Buss, of Cherokee, Iowa; a son, Robert Glade, of Littleton, Colorado; granddaughters, Robin Adams-Hays, of Climax, Minnesota and Lindsey Glade, of Littleton, Colorado; sisters, La Vonne Dirks, and her husband, Lyle, of Ocheyedan, Iowa; Mavis Miller, of Lake Forest, California; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, brothers (Kenneth and Loren), sisters (Lillian Ostermann, Marge Butcher, Naomi Hill and Marie Pruett)2 |

Lyle Douglas Dirks was born on September 24, 1921, in Allendorf, Iowa. He was the son of Claus and Marie (Ihle) Dirks. He lived his youth in rural Allendorf, where he attended a country school. He also attended school in Ocheyedan and high school in Sibley. Lyle was drafted into the service in 1942. After basic training he passed a test to be accepted into the Army Air Corp Program. He was a B-17 pilot and held the rank of 2nd Lieutenant while flying in Europe. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant. He flew 30 missions and was honorably discharged in 1945. He was united in marriage to LaVonne Alice Glade of Ocheyedan, Iowa, on August 16, 1944, in Worthington, Minnesota. They lived in Gulfport, Mississippi, until they moved to Ocheyedan and farmed. They later moved to Long Beach, California, where Lyle worked in the Oil Refineries. They also lived in Westminster, California, where Lyle worked with construction. They moved to Lebanon, Oregon, where they had a small farm with livestock and Lyle worked in a plywood factory. In 1969, they moved back to Ocheyedan, where they farmed for 13 years. In 1984, they retired and moved into Ocheyedan, after their home was built. In 1999, they enjoyed traveling to London, England, where he had served in the military. He taught 4th graders in Ocheyedan and Lakefield and Sioux Valley, Minnesota, about his experiences flying in Europe in the military. Lyle?s children are very proud of their father. He loved to take time for his children and grandchildren, and teach them about life, and how to fish, hunt and trap. He was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Ocheyedan and the American Legion. He passed away on Tuesday, January 8, 2008, at the Osceola Community Hospital in Sibley.
