Obituary | 20 January 2018 | Obituary: The obituary for David was recorded on 20 January 2018. [from Moody Funeral Services - Mount Airy, NC] David Arthur McCullough, 81, died on the afternoon of January 19th, 2018 with ALS following a peaceful morning of watching ESPN and visits with friends and family. He was born on March 13th, 1936 in Lima, OH to A.F. “Butch” and Mary Alyce McCullough. As a teenager, he cultivated loves of golf and music, both of which brought him joy throughout his life. He graduated Lima High School in 1954, having been involved in a wide range of activities from Student Council to the choir and theater. Mr. McCullough was a Graduate of Carnegie Institute in Cleveland, Ohio and was certified as a Medical Technologist by the American Medical Technologists (AMT) in 1955 and the Department of Health and Human Services in 1975. He was an active AMT member of the state and national level for sixty one years and served as secretary, vice president, president, and a member of the board of directors in the North Carolina state organization. Nationally, Dave was a member of the inceptive Phlebotomy Committee, served as a member of the Standards and Qualifications Committee and was Chair of the committee for many years until he resigned the position due to his health on December 31, 2017. He was also a member of the National Board of Directors and was elected as the National President of AMT. Mr. McCullough received many state and national awards for his service including the “Order of the Golden Microscope”, the highest award bestowed upon an AMT member. In 1957, he began his 40 year career at Northern Hospital of Surry County as a staff technologist and later the Director of the Laboratory in 1961. In 1964, he helped establish the Northern Hospital School of Medical Laboratory Technology and served as the Technical Director of the School until his retirement in 1998. Due to his encouragement and influence, many of the school’s graduates became state and national leaders for AMT, a legacy of which he was very proud. Outside his professional career, he lived a dedicated life of service through active membership in the Mt. Airy Lion’s Club, of which he was a past president. For many years, he served on the Board of Directors at Hope Valley. In this role, he quietly supported and mentored countless people through the disease of addiction and into recovery. Always an ear of compassionate strength on the other end of a phone line, he privately helped people day or night. He lived with a love of strumming the guitar, sharp conviction against injustice, and a soft heart for children and animals. He never missed an opportunity to stand on the front porch—hands on his hips and eyes to the sky—to remark on a full moon or watch a thunderstorm. His humor, warmth, and effortless charm brought smiles to all he met and left multitudes of treasured memories to those closest to him. His spirit is carried on by his four daughters, Maureen McCullough (husband Richard Beggs), Melanie Billett, Jennifer McCullough, and Kathleen McCullough; as well as his two granddaughters, Stephanie Turner (husband Ryan Turner) and Mary Alyce McCullough, M.D. (husband Brad Shugoll). He is reunited with his wife, Delores McCullough and his siblings, Rev. Marlo McCullough and Terrie Thorburn (husband James Thorburn). A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 27, 2018 at 3:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends Saturday from 2:00 PM until time for the service at Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Airy. The family welcomes flowers or memorial contributions can be may to the ALS Association or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Online condolences may be made at www.moodyfuneralservices.com.1 |
