[from The Grand Island Independent - (Jan/6/2010)] Earl Schroder Earl Wesley Schroder, 85, of Grand Island died Monday, Jan. 4, 2010, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church, with a family prayer service at 1:45. The Rev. Jack Gillam will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday at Apfel Funeral Home in Grand Island. Mr. Schroder was born on March 11, 1924, near Ohiowa to Fred and Louise Schroder. He was united in marriage to Florence (Domeier) on Oct. 27, 1946, at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church at Grafton. Survivors of the immediate family include his wife of 63 years, Florence; two daughters and sons-in-law, Connie and Don Coatman of Tucson Ariz., and Sue and Jim Bolin of Gibbon; a son, Stan Schroder of Grand Island; a sister, Imogene Ough and sister-in-law, Mureldine Schroder, both of Geneva. Additional survivors include seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He grew up in the Fillmore County area and graduated from Geneva High School in 1942. He served in the Army from 1942 to 1946 during World War II in the Pacific Rim. He achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant with the 102nd AAA Automatic Weapons Batallion. Earl and Florence made their home in Grand Island for eight years and then moved to Kearney, Elm Creek and back to Grand Island. He attended the Grand Island Business College from 1946 to 1947. Earl belonged to Trinity Lutheran Church of Grand Island and was a member of LLL and voting assembly. He also was very active at Zion Lutheran Church in Kearney from 1954 to 1987. He was also a member of the VFW. He played and loved sports. He managed his son's Little League baseball team in Kearney. He played golf at Jack Rabbit Run Golf Course and bowled at Westside Bowling Lanes until he became ill in 2009. Earl and Florence loved to travel and spent many winters in Arizona. Earl was an agent for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company for 29 years. He serviced the Elm Creek Insurance Agency at the bank in Elm Creek. His faith in God and his family were very important to him and he will always be cherished. He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.
